In Austin Hope’s younger days he was something of a troublemaker. And on those days when his school work or attitude didn’t quite live up to the family’s expectations, he was sent to the vineyards for a hard day’s work meant to teach him a lesson. Little did the Hope’s know that this childhood punishment would be the beginning of a life-long passion and career. It was in those days spent in the vineyards, the Paso Robles sun beating down and his hands in the dirt, that Austin found inspiration for his life’s journey.
Troublemaker is inspired by those early days of pushing boundaries and finding your path. Still stirring things up, we here at Troublemaker are all about challenging the status quo and embracing the journey of life. The way we see it, rules restrict our ability to create and innovate.

Troublemaker Red Blend #16
Central Coast California
Lusciously rich in color and texture, the Troublemaker Red Blend is a beautiful wine with aromas of dark fruit, black pepper and a hint of asphalt. On the pallet, sweet vanilla, black berry cobbler, fresh currant and our signature splash of acidity create a lingering flavor that is finished with smooth & silky tannins.
Comprised of varietals that flourish in Paso Robles’ distinct growing region, Troublemaker consists of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Zinfandel. Syrah is the backbone of the wine, setting the stage for a fruit-forward style and a full body. Petite Sirah contributes to the deep ruby color. Sweet and bright red fruit flavors of Grenache blend with the rustic and lively flavors of the Mourvèdre, while Zinfandel adds its signature zing to round out the blend.

Tasting Notes
Troublemaker Blend 16 has an opaque purple color. The nose is bursting with jammy boysenberry and blackberry, along with a fresh hint of raspberry. These fruit aromas carry through to the palate and are accentuated by underlying tones of peppercorns, dried tobacco and roasted coffee. Velvety tannins and balancing acidity bring out the vibrant fruit character of this complex blend.
Winemaker Notes
The grapes were harvested, crushed, then cold-soaked prior to fermentation in five-ton, open-top tanks, as well as and 20-60 ton closed-top stainless steel tanks for 7 to 14 days. Wines were aged in oak for an average of 20 months, depending on the vintage (2015 – 2021). All barrel aging was done in French and American oak barrels, 70% of which were new. Blend 16 was initially assembled in November of 2022. The final blend was crossflow filtered prior to bottling in late January of 2023.
Vineyard Notes
The vineyards that we source for Troublemaker are located along the Central Coast, with the majority grown in the Paso Robles AVA. The region is primarily arid, like the Mediterranean, so the inland areas of the Central Coast tend to average 14 inches of annual rain and have mild to moderate weather throughout the growing season, which is perfect for these red varietals to grow. Our summers are warm to hot which slows berry development, keeping them small with a desirable skin to juice ratio. We harvest from mid-September to late October. Harvest months are typically warm and dry, aiding in fruit maturity. Our growing season is long, aiding in pronounced and balanced flavors and color.

Hope Family Wines
The Hope family has been farming in Paso Robles for more than 30 years. When they arrived in this barely-discovered region, they planted apples and grapes. Little did they know that the rolling, oak-studded terrain of Paso Robles would one day become a viticultural terroir of significance and one of the top winegrowing regions for quality red wine within the Central Coast.
Gone are the apple orchards. Today, the Hopes cultivate mature vineyards of the varieties best suited to their area including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Mourvedre and Grenache. Vine density has increased and each vine is asked to produce very little fruit. The terroir of this domain expresses itself in its unique regional character. Regardless of the varieties planted, the expression of Paso Robles is displayed in the glass with spice, licorice and berry in the nose, soft textures and silky tannins on the palate.

When Chuck Hope first laid eyes on the oak-studded hills of Paso Robles, he saw a land of beauty and opportunity. Struck by the possibilities hidden in the many microclimates of the Central Coast, Chuck and his wife Marlyn moved the family to Paso Robles in 1978 to start what would become Hope Family Wines. They raised their children, Austin and Chelsea, amongst the grapevines and oak barrels and were on the forefront of the Central Coast becoming a world-class viticultural region.
Hope Family Wines is still proudly family-owned and operated with Austin Hope now presiding over five unique labels: Liberty School, Austin Hope, Treana, Troublemaker, and Quest. A true family business, Austin’s wife Celeste, a professional photographer, spearheads all winery-related photography; together they are raising the third generation of Hopes, Ainsley and Avery, amongst the grapevines and oak barrels. Austin maintains the Hope family’s legacy of sustainable farming practices and long-standing tradition of making delicious, reliable, and accessible wines, all while infusing a vibrancy that resonates from the vine to the glass.
