Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon
Mix & Match 2012 & 2013
What makes this wine unique?
Mr. Wagner, himself offered this, “A rich, dense ruby color, hints at the dark fruit nose of blackberry and currant that carries through to the palate, interwoven with complex aromas of black licorice, anise and crème de cassis. On the palate, the wine opens up to reveal an earthiness, with brown spice, cigar box and ripe dark fruits that linger throughout the extracted and long finish. The texture is opulent and rich, yet has a velvety quality with supple density. Rich, fine-grained tannins are balanced with ripe fruit, acidity and oak. Winemaker's Notes
Caymus Vineyards, Napa Valley
Caymus Vineyards produces two Cabernets Sauvignons – a “Napa Valley” and the venerable “Special Selection”. Both Cabernet bottlings have aromas and flavors which can only be achieved through “hang time” – a technique which chances the loss of crop if early winter sets in. Leaving the fruit to “hang” on the vine unusually long develops suppleness, increases color, and matures the tannins of the grapes. The wines are abundant in textural tannins yet soft as velvet. Crop thinning, allowing measured sunlight to reach the vine’s fruit zone, and waiting for increased ripeness are all part of our viticultural practices. Caymus Cabernets offer a wide array of aromas and flavors including cocoa, cassis and vanilla.
Caymus is located on 73 acres in Rutherford - owned and farmed since the 1940s by the Wagner family. The families of Caymus founders Charlie and Lorna Belle Glos Wagner emigrated from the winegrowing regions of Alsace, France and Rheinpfalz, Germany, respectively, and have roots in Napa Valley going as far back as the mid-1850s. At the age of 19, Chuck Wagner joined his parents Charlie and Lorna in founding Caymus Vineyards with its first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon produced in 1972. In 1975, the Wagners produced their first Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon made from outstanding Cabernet lots of that vintage. It is the only wine to have twice been named Wine Spectator magazine's "Wine of the Year" for the 1984 and 1990 vintages. Both Charlie and Chuck Wagner were honored with Wine Spectator's "Distinguished Service Award" for their contributions to the American wine industry. Caymus Vineyards is still the home base of the Wagner family. Chuck Wagner's children, Charlie II, Joseph, and Jenny perpetuate a proud family tradition of farming and winemaking throughout the state of California. In addition to Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, the Wagner Family of Wine tasting room located on Caymus Vineyards property serves and sells Wagner Family of Wine brands Mer Soleil Chardonnays, Belle Glos and Meiomi Pinot Noirs, and the classic California blend - Conundrum.

"Zeroes in on a rich, hedonistic core of wild berry, blackberry, plum and currant, with a graceful, elegant mouthfeel and supple, caressing tannins leading to a long, powerful and refined aftertaste that keeps reverberating while maintaining a strong personality. Drink now through 2030."

"The full-throttle character is here as expected with lots of ripe fruit and toasted oak. Sage and mint. Silky tannins; the ripe fruit dominates. But it shows form and juiciness. Try it in 2019 as it mellows with age."
Caymus Special Selection Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
Rated 96 Points by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate
"The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection has a dense blackish/purple color and creamy, sweet crème de cassis fruit, blackberries, a touch of graphite and vanilla. This exuberant, boisterous, in-your-face style of Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly a fruit bomb, so be warned. Full-bodied and opulent with stunning concentration and richness, the wine has no hard edges and is much in the Caymus style of terrific fruit intensity (most of it black and blue), voluptuous texture, and a stunning finish with plenty of glycerin, wood and spice. The alcohol on the label is listed at 14.8%, which seems about accurate. I have Caymus Special Selection in my cellar back to some of the historic wines made by Chuck Wagner’s father in the early 1970s, and while the style’s gotten more precocious and consumer-friendly, these wines, even the more latter-day styles, have a tendency to age beautifully. This can be drunk now, or cellared for 20+ years."

"Exhibits a delicious, up-front core of juicy dark berry, blackberry, black licorice and creamy, toasty, vanilla-scented oak. Appropriately tannic and structured, this is made in a style you can drink now or cellar for up to a decade. Drink now through 2026."
