A smoking value year-in, year-out, the 2021 Syrah Tous Les Jours offers juicy black and blue fruits as well as medium body, some peppery herb and leather notes, present tannins, and a clean, lengthy finish. It would be a great introduction to the wines of Murray and is well worth buying and drinking any time over the coming 4-6 years or thereabout.
Andrew Murray Syrah Tous Les Jours 2021
The Andrew Murray Tous les Jours Santa Ynez Syrah is a quintessential Santa Ynez Valley Syrah. It is simultaneously Bold and Balanced, Rich and Smooth, Fruit Forward and Earthy. It is impossibly dark and full-bodied, without ever going over the top. It is heavily inspired by Northern Rhone Syrah (Hermitage) and Australian Shiraz (Barossa Valley). The aromas and flavors are dominated by black cherry, raspberry, white pepper, forest floor and toasty oak. It is absolutely unique and special expression of Syrah. Moreover, It is a style that one can enjoy every day.
Tasting Notes
The quality and drinkability of this Syrah is informed by 25 years of winemaking experience. Consumers and critics alike keep telling us that we should charge more for this highly scored and awarded wine. We would rather it remain an "Affordable Luxury" that can be consumed "Tous les Jours"!
Vineyards
As a passionate winemaker, I have always believed that wines are born in the vineyard, and that we winemakers are simply stewards of the land. It’s all about the confuluence of soil and climate and topography, or as the French would say, ‘terroir’.
Santa Ynez Valley
We were originally attracted to the Santa Ynez Valley due to its absolutely unique transverse mountain ranges, cool coastal climate, and ancient sea-bed soils. Nowhere else in California do the coastal ranges run from west to east, as they do here in Santa Barbara. These ranges funnel cool, damp, coastal winds that leap from the Pacific Ocean around Lompoc and race towards the inland deserts of California. Daily winds are the defining feature of our microclimate, with precious breezes that moderate our daytime temps and create an ideal climate for our Rhone varieties. We are a viticultural region on the edge - our grapes are allowed a very long growing season (around the longest in the world) from mid February to mid November, which allows for greater and more concentrated flavor development. All of this adds up to richly structured, long-lived and highly drinkable wines.
We currently farm about 150 acres of grapes spread across 3 different vineyard sites and three Appellations. Curtis Vineyard is our home vineyard, directly above our Estate Winery. It is home to 100 acres of grapes. We carefully and lovingly farm these grapes for ourselves and our myriad grape customers. Curtis Vineyard began its life in the late 1970's, just as grapes were beginning to be planted in the Santa Ynez Valley. The oldest section of vines is called Jurassic Park, and is home to some burly, own-rooted Chenin Blanc. The majority of the vineyard is 25-30 years old and just hitting its prime. We have been slowly re-working the vineyard by grafting and replanting, and we have had some great success from these efforts. We bottled our first Estate Syrah a few years ago and continue to explore different expressions of Syrah with some very special and limited bottlings, named for our Children. In addition to Syrah, we grow amazing Grenache and Mourvedre that make it into varietal and blended bottlings from the Estate. Lastly, we grow Roussanne and Grenache Blanc for our white blend, Enchante, and a bit of Viognier to co-ferment alongside the Syrah.
Winemaking
Our winemaking philosophy is fundamentally simple, and has been informed by thirty years of experience in France, Australia, and California. I have always believed that wines are made in the vineyard, and that winemakers are simply stewards of the land. Truly remarkable wines are not “made”, rather, they are grown. It’s all about soil and climate, or as the French would say, ‘terroir’. The cool, coastal climate, uplifted, hilly topography, and ancient sea-bed soils converge to create the ideal terroir for our Estate Grown grapes. We farm our vineyards sustainably to ensure that we can harvest modest yields of impossibly high-quality fruit.
I remain convinced that this narrow area, and our Estate in particular, is in the perfect confluence of weather, soil, and topography to craft world class Rhône wines, without equal. We have a state-of-the-art winemaking facility and an experienced winemaking team that allows us to craft highly prized, celebrated, limited, and age worthy wines each vintage.
Andrew Murray
Vineyards
Andrew Murray fell in love with the emerging Rhône varieties, Syrah and Viognier, in the late 1980’s while traveling through France’s Rhône Valley. Leaving his UC Berkeley paleontology studies behind, he pursued his new mistress, Syrah, with an internship in Australia. His three-month tryst evolved into a 15-month romance with the famed Australian Shiraz. Returning to the states, he earned a bachelor’s degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis’ renowned wine program, then founded his eponymous Santa Ynez winery and vineyard. Andrew and his family were drawn to the natural beauty, climate, soils and topography of Santa Barbara County. It all reminded him of his travels through the Rhône Valley where he first fell in love with the notion of winegrowing while just a teenager.
Andrew’s focus and dedication to his craft have culminated in what Robert Parker, Jr. calls, “…one of the shining stars in the Santa Barbara firmament.” This perennially youthful perfectionist has been named ‘Tastemaker of the Year’ by Food and Wine Magazine, as well as, ‘One of the most fearsome talents in food and wine.’ Still, despite myriad accolades, Andrew remains the same modest, approachable, contemplative man he was when he first embarked to Australia back in 1992. He is eternally committed to vinicultural ‘Kaizen’ – the unrelenting pursuit of continuous improvement.
As Robert Parker, Jr. put it, “…Andrew Murray’s offerings are a breath of fresh air given their exceptionally high quality and realistic prices – reader take note.” We hope you’ll come visit us and delight in sampling the fruits of Andrew’s passionate labors.
