Wine Tasting Analysis
Pale yellow colour with steely reflections. Floral aromas from the Mediterranean. In the nose we detect white flowers and stone fruit. In the mouth it is expressive and balanced.
Accompaniment
Perfect alone or with seafood, fish, pasta or salad. Ideal with Oriental cuisine and spicy food due to its high sugar level.
Vintage
Characterized by the drought for another year, although the summer was milder than normal and the spring rains resulted in a long ripening that produced grapes of the highest quality. Harvest at the beginning of September.
Vineyard
The Moscatel vineyards are situated between the Sierra de Salinas, Sierra de Umbria and Sierra de La Sima at an altitude of 600 to 750 metres above sea level. The grapes from this vine come from a total of 20 hectares planted between 1960 and 1970. All of them grown in the low system under natural conditions. Calcareous soil gives very low production.
Production
Indigenous varieties are picked at the beginning of September. At this time the grapes are mature and the musts very clean. Fermenting at a low temperature (16 degrees), to maintain the fruity tone of the grape, thus obtaining a very aromatic, pleasing wine
DO Alicante
Alicante wines have been awarded numerous national and international awards, and they are highly rated by wine experts. Over time, various Iberian settlements, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs as well as Christians have contributed to the historical background and experience of this D.O. (designation of origin) which spans thousands of years.
Archaeological finds have disinterred ancient villas, wine amphoras, jugs, utensils as well as other amphora remains. In 1510, King Ferdinand the Catholic banned the distribution of wines from other territories. Orihuela, Jijona, Monforte and Novelda were at that time high yielding wine producers.
According to the D. O. Alicante Regulatory Council, there are 44 wineries spread across an area of 14,613 hectares of vineyards situated on both sides of the Vinalopó River in Alicante province.
The province of Alicante produces:
White Varieties – Chardonnay, Macabeo, Meseguera, Moscatel of Alexandria, Sauvignon Blanc, Planta Fina and Verdil.
Red Varieties – Garnacha Tinta, Garnacha Tintorera, Monastrell, Tempranillo, Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Noir and Shyra.
Wines produced in Alicante include young, white, rosé and red (with an indication of the vintage on the label), harvest, aged (aged for 24 months), reserve (aged for 36 months) and grand reserve (aged for 42 months), mature wines and muscatel wines produced in the Marina area from the Moscatel of Alexandria grape variety, as well as the internationally renowned Fondillón made from the Monastrell grape. Aged wines must be at least two calendar years old.
Bodegas Volver
Our most prized asset is our heritage of vines between 30 and 90 years old, indigenous varieties cultivated in a sustainable way with minimal intervention.
The project of Bodegas Volver was founded in 2004 by Rafael Cañizares, enologist through studies and viticulturist through his family tradition of four generations bound to the vine and wine.
The pillars of the bodega are based on the repositioning of quality Spanish wines and recovering old indigenous vineyards which, either through low production or lack of generational succession, had been lost.
We create wines under different denominations of origin; La Mancha, Alicante, Jumilla and Rueda.
Each award and mention of recognition brings satisfaction to our work but what makes us most proud is passing it on to the next generation. Today, Sofia Cañizares, Daughter of Rafael, is preparing to take the generational baton. She is being trained and has very clear ideas, which began with her father, and has already created her own wine under the supervision of her father and mentor.
Rafael Canizares
Born in 1967 in Las Mesas (Cuenca) Rafael Canizares’ life has revolved around La mancha and wine. His great grandparents were vine-growers and so four generations of his family have lived and breathed the love of the vineyard and viticulture.
