Winemaker Notes
An impressive classic Séguret - about as good as Côtes du Rhône-Villages gets!
We source grapes for this cuvee from vineyards situated in the rugged mountain terroir of Seguret in the southern Rhone Valley.
Low yielding old-vine Grenache and Syrah work together in great harmony to provide an intensely luscious wine that we then age in French oak for almost two years.
The result is a seductive, full-bodied wine where ripe fruit is overlaid with oaky nuances and interwoven with sweet spice and pepper.
Tasting Notes
An impressive classic Séguret - about as good as Côtes du Rhône-Villages gets! Paler ruby than some earlier vintages due to the extreme proportion of Grenache, the nose is however as explosive, plush and opulent as ever, layered with exotic spice, cracked black pepper and of course streaked with vanilla. The palate is instantly appealing, polished and smooth on entry but steeped in depth and texture as the flavors swirl around, lengthen and delight. The lasting impression is satisfying - a big, opulent and sweet Grenache driven wine with obvious oak quality, great structure, length and finish.
Vinification
All the grapes are hand-picked. Traditional long cuvaison using only indigenous yeasts and remontages to release all the potential of the grapes and their skins. 24 months in French oak 228 litre barrels and one quarter in 600 litre demimuids, one third new, one third of 2nd fill and one third of 3rd & 4th fill.
Viticulture
Sourced from ‘Les Turcs,” a single 7ha east-facing terraced high altitude vineyard in the hills behind the village of Séguret, planted with mostly Grenache intermingled with some Syrah, vines whose minimum age is 50, many older still. The high altitude, old vines and very particular terroir make our Séguret quite unique. These are stony, argillaceous limestone terraces high above the schistous slopes of the village of Séguret. Here the grapes benefit from the morning sun and even ripening temperatures.
The Vineyard
The estate is focused around six plots. At the highest point on La Montée du Ventabren (altitude 300m) sit Les Six Terrasses to the left and La Pauline to the right. Both are of Grenache Noir, date from the same vintage (planted 1969), and are terraced vineyards. These old bush vine Grenache Noir with their terroir of large, heat retaining pebble stones, produce low yields of deeply concentrated grapes. They are some of the best plots in the whole of the Cairanne appellation.
At a slightly lower altitude through the estate woodland is Font Crozes. A plot that is well-exposed to the wind and well suited to Mourvèdre – like Grenache Noir a late-ripening grape. Just around the corner from Font Crozes is south/south-west facing Saint Andéol, planted with Boutinot's oldest Grenache Noir. Planting records date back as long ago as 1946. Gloriously low-yielding and generally the last rows picked.
Of course in addition to Grenache Noir the other grape variety essential to any Cairanne is Syrah. Lower down the same hillside to Les Six Terrasses and La Pauline are two plots named La Ruche. The sixth plot is a small triangle called La Truffière. La Truffière was once a truffle orchard, but a rigorous soil analysis determined that Syrah would be well suited to this terroir.
Domaine Boutinot
Boutinot’s love affair with the Southern Rhône spans thirty years of making wine in the region. In 2010 the relationship was sealed with the purchase of a winery and vineyards above the village of Cairanne. Domaine Boutinot’s seven vineyards, planted with classic southern Rhône varieties – old vine Grenache Noir and Syrah, Mourvèdre and the more traditional Carignan Noir - all fall within the Cairanne Cru map, sanctioned in 2016 when Cairanne was granted its own appellation status. By working with our vigneron neighbours, we help revive traditional varieties such as Cinsault and Counoise and in the cellar we prefer time-honoured winemaking methods such as a long cuvasion aided only by natural yeasts, gentle remontage, manual pigeage and patient maturation in a nursery of French oak barrels.
Fide et Arte
‘Fide et Arte’ is the name given to the signature range of wines from Domaine Boutinot Rhône. Sourced from our vineyards above Cairanne and from exceptional terroir across the Côtes du Rhône, the range aims to express the very best of this diverse region. At the heart of this range is Les Coteaux - a blend that includes wine from some of the best-named villages in the southern Rhône, enriched with wines from Cairanne or Séguret, an unusual top-down approach shared by high end producers. With our cru Cairanne wines we aim to revive age old traditions, making wines using time-honoured, natural methods. Each wine bears the motto ‘Fide et Arte’ - ‘Trust and Skill’ – and the distinctive Boutinot Bee. Together these symbolize wines made by working in harmony with nature, both in the vineyards and the cellar, with little intervention but a lot patience from winemakers Eric Monnin and Julien Dugas.
