This is a complex expression, thanks in part to the 11% Cabernet Franc. Aromas of roasted plum, chocolate, mahogany and black olive recall a wooden booth in a classic bar. The palate hits with acid and then a tannic bite, offering strawberry, chai and mace flavors that are lively while rich. Tannins cling on for an extended finish, offering licorice spice to say goodbye. Matt Kettmann
Broadside Blackletter Cabernet Sauvignon
Paso Robles 2020
Inspired by the original typeface used on centuries old broadside ballads, we share with you the story of Paso Robles. Hand harvested Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc is matured as separate lots in French oak barrels before masterful blending by Winemaker, Adam LaZarre
Appellation: Paso Robles
Varietal: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon 11% Cabernet Franc
Vintage: 2020
Alcohol: 15%
Winemaker Notes
Deep and inky, with alluring flavors of blackberry compote, cigar box and herbes de Provence. Subtle hints of cocoa and violets blend into well-balanced tannins with a velvety and seductive finish.
Blend: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc
Winemaker Notes
All grapes in this blend were hand-picked in the middle of the night between October 10th and October 26th. Each lot was fermented in small, one-ton fermentation bins and punched down by hand twice a day until they reached 5% sugar at which point punch down frequency changed to once a day until dry and the cap dropped.
Vineyard Details
Almost equal parts Santa Margarita Ranch Vineyard block 49 and Hastings Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon from high up in the Adelaida hills. These are complimented with Willow Creek district’s Grosso-Kresser Vineyard Cab and a small amount of Casagrande Vineyard Cab from the far west side of the Adelaida district. Cabernet Franc from Hastings Ranch Vineyard rounds out the blend.
Maturation & Ageing
The wines were aged in a mix of new French oak barrels (30%) along with a smaller number of new French/American hybrid barrels (10%). French neutral barrels were used for the balance. Wines were racked twice during ageing with final blending during the second racking at one year.
Broadside Wines
Wine With Intention
Share Now, Preserve for the Future
Since 2006, Broadside has crafted wines that embody the pioneering spirit of Paso Robles. Bold, expressive and distinct, our wines are produced with intention and demonstrate our dedication to sustainable farming and winemaking. With every vintage, we’re blazing our own trail and sharing our journey with you.
Rooted in Paso Robles
Located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Paso Robles is a vast region of rugged terrain and dramatic climate, with an unmistakable pioneering spirit.
Maritime breezes and coastal fog roll in from the nearby Pacific Ocean, contributing to temperature swings up to 50 degrees between night and day. Ancient oak trees tower throughout the vineyards where a rare diversity of soil types cover the earth.
These natural conditions create an ideal and unique place for winegrowing. We’re proud to work with vineyard partners who are passionate stewards of this land and committed to preserving it for future generations.
Adam Lazarre, Winemaker
Award-winning winemaker Adam LaZarre joined the Broadside team in 2013. A Navy veteran who developed a love for wine while stationed overseas, Adam enrolled in the winemaking and viticulture program at Fresno State after finishing his military service. He ultimately fell in love with Paso Robles and has now lived in the region for over twenty years. Today Adam works with our partners in the Central Coast winegrowing community who are dedicated to sustainable practices, producing wines that express a true sense of place vintage after vintage.
The Future is Sustainable
Sustainable farming is the foundation of everything we do. How we care for the land impacts everything, including the wildlife and people who live and work there. We believe that sustainable practices are essential to the quality of our wines and to the future of our community and planet. We’re immensely proud that the vast majority of our vineyard partners are certified sustainable through SIP – an organization that holds some of the world’s most rigorous sustainability standards.
