This special Anniversary vintage celebrates 50 years of making Cabernet in Napa Valley. It results from happy soils, healthy vines, low crop yield, low to no irrigation, and harvest at high ripeness levels – all key ingredients of the Caymus style. The wine is rich and round on the palate, with textural tannins that are non-bitter. Evidence of French oak, but not overplayed. Acidity for balance, but not tart. There are no hurdles to enjoying the delicious essence of this wine, which exhibits an expression of the style for which Caymus is known.
A Special Anniversary Message From Chuck Wagner, Owner/Winemaker
“It’s been 50 Years since my parents and I first made a Caymus Cabernet. In 1972, few wineries existed – and each of us had a chance for a bright future. Maybe only Robert Mondavi truly believed that Napa Cabernet would reach extraordinary heights. I recall he put his finger on wine’s long history – being a healthful accompaniment to fine dining and greater enjoyment for body and soul. Caymus consisted of a mom, pop and son team – that was it. We began with fermenting tanks that resembled redwood hot tubs and a manual wine transfer pump that operated like an antique exercise machine. Inglenook and Beaulieu gave us some of their used barrels, a kind of neighborly generosity that might seem remarkable today. We were so small we did it all – my father Charlie the winemaker who taught me the trades of grape growing and winemaking, my mother Lorna Belle the stalwart supporter who held us together. The years with my parents were great, and I am fortunate now to be working alongside two of my children, Charlie and Jenny – accomplished winemakers in their own right. Much in the wine world has changed, but for us much is the same, as we remain family owned. We still farm vineyards, taste and make wines – and enjoy a good bottle with those we hold close. This 50th vintage calls back to the excitement of the first Caymus – lush, dark, softly textured and balanced, our signature Napa Valley Cabernet.” Chuck Wagner, Owner/Winemaker

Caymus has a signature style that is dark in color, with rich fruit and ripe tannins – as approachable in youth as in maturity. Since its founding in 1972, Caymus has become renowned as a consistent leader in the production of Napa Valley Cabernet. Grapes for this wine are farmed in a range of Napa’s sub-appellations – from Coombsville to Calistoga – with fruit from the valley floor creating lushness and the hillsides providing backbone. Diversification enables us to make the best possible wine in a given year, featuring layered, lush aromas and flavors, including cocoa, cassis and ripe berries.
Winemaking
Caymus produces two Cabernets Sauvignons - a “Napa Valley” and the venerable “Special Selection”. Both Cabernet bottlings have aromas and flavors which can only be achieved through extended hang time – a technique which chances the loss of crop if early winter sets in. Leaving the fruit to hang on the vine unusually long develops suppleness, increases color, and matures the tannins of the grapes. The wines are abundant in textural tannins yet soft as velvet. Crop thinning, allowing measured sunlight to reach the vine’s fruit zone, and waiting for increased ripeness are all part of our viticultural practices. Caymus Cabernets offer a wide array of aromas and flavors including cocoa, cassis and vanilla.
Caymus Vineyards
Chuck Wagner and his late parents, Lorna and Charlie, started Caymus Vineyards in 1972. They were a family of farmers with roots in Napa Valley dating back to the 1850s. Today, the family’s two Cabernet Sauvignons – Caymus Napa Valley and Caymus Special Selection – are among the region’s most celebrated wines.
Chuck now works alongside two of his children, Charlie and Jenny, and the family produces diverse wines from Napa Valley, other parts of California and beyond. Continually pursuing new ideas, they feel extremely fortunate to spend their days farming grapes and making wine.
