I feel this wine expresses the greatness of California and its hidden pockets where Cabernet can excel. The cold Pacific Ocean running the entire length of the state presents maritime influences – and with each small distance eastward the climate warms. Background: Introduced with the 2021 vintage, this wine stems from excitement over California’s diverse vineyard land, often in lesser-known areas, that can produce exceptional Cabernet.
Sourcing: We search for sites with climatic conditions, soils and topography ideally suited to Cabernet – places from Paso Robles to lesser-known areas in Lake, San Benito and Monterey Counties.
Style: With ripe fruit and luxurious tannins, this wine reveals the Caymus character, and is drinkable upon release or with age.
The Wine
Cabernet can excel when four key elements are in place – Climate, Soils, Farming and Winemaking. When these basic ingredients are similar, so are the resulting wines, even when the grapes are grown in different locations. This reasoning applies to Caymus “California” Cabernet that is sourced mainly from stone-laden vineyards throughout the state that enjoy ideal maritime influence. Caymus Vineyards
Chuck Wagner and his late parents, Lorna and Charlie, started Caymus Vineyards in 1972. They were a family of farmers with roots in Napa Valley dating back to the 1850s. Today, the family’s two Cabernet Sauvignons – Caymus Napa Valley and Caymus Special Selection – are among the region’s most celebrated wines.
Chuck now works alongside two of his children, Charlie and Jenny, and the family produces diverse wines from Napa Valley, other parts of California and beyond. Continually pursuing new ideas, they feel extremely fortunate to spend their days farming grapes and making wine.
