Family * Dreams * The Land
The Journey is the Reward
Staete Landt Wines is made up of a team of passionate staff members. Each individual plays a prominent role in the production of the unique wines that have helped to set a benchmark in the world famous region of Marlborough.
Philosophy
Staete Landt is quite unique in its approach of producing single vineyard estate grown wines only. The wines are based on the soil profiles of the 24 different parcels of land within the estate. In reality we have 24 single vineyards, each one providing the eventual wine with a distinct flavour and textural component.
Retaining the individuality of each of these parcels within our estate is vital to our viticultural practises. We know that taking one little step in the vineyard may not make a huge difference to the ensuing wine – but when you undertake a lot of little steps the results are momentous.
Hence we have 17 separate irrigation blocks and we deal with the different ripening characteristics with careful individual canopy management practises. We undertake strict pruning regimes and bunch thin regularly during the summer months to ensure the smaller yields ripen to perfection.
Wines
At Staete Landt we aren’t interested in producing wines that are generic – our goal is to give you a tantalising experience. We love complexity, texture and finesse within the wine and believe each variety has its own individual personality. Our mantra is: Less is More – so we keep intervention to a minimum.
The saying that great wines are made in the vineyard is very true at Staete Landt. We place huge emphasis on clones, rootstock and varieties matching the soil profile of our estate. Once the fruit comes into the winery, each parcel is treated as an individual, ensuring the differing flavour components are retained.
After the wines are finished, we blend the separate parcels back together, creating wines that not only show the true terroir of our land, but are also complex in their nature.
History
Staete Landt Estate is set in the Golden Triangle of Rapaura. This is arguably the oldest and most established appallation of Marlborough, as within this triangle are some of the vineyards of the founders that took Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to the world.
Historically the area was covered in trees and bush, an abundant hunting ground for the native people of Marlborough. The land had only been farmed for 70 years, prior to our buying it, in 1997. By that stage it was home to hundreds of apple and cherry trees.
The old riverbed gravels of the Wairau which form the soils in this part of Marlborough have proven to be excellent for grapegroing. Warm, free draining soils, riverstones and riverdeposits form the ideal base for the unique flavours of this terroir
The Name
When Abel Tasman first discovered New Zealand back in 1642, the name he gave to this land mass was “Staete Landt” which means “Land (discovered in honour) of the Governors (Staete) (of the Dutch Republic)”.
More than 350 years on, “Staete Landt” is the name for an emerging wine company founded by Ruud Maasdam and Dorien Vermaas, originally born in the Netherlands. The link between their new home and New Zealand’s discovery by one of their predecessors, was obvious: the perfect combination of their heritage and their future.
They uncovered a copy of the original map drawn by Abel Tasman. This very first and original map of New Zealand strongly influenced the label design for Staete Landt wines. Abel Tasman sailed the West Coast of New Zealand and quite accurately mapped the coastlines.
On his return trip to Batavia Abel Tasman also discovered Tasmania (Van Diemen Land), Fiji and Tonga. Upon his return to the Dutch Republic it was decided to change Staete Landt to its present name "New Zealand" (Nova Zeelandia).
