Rated 93 Points by James Suckling
Deep savory nose with notes of dried thyme, rosemary and wet earth. Seriously structured with a ton of character, this is a very strong wine for the vintage. However, the tannins are anything but dominant at the long, moderately dry, earthy finish. From three hectares of 50 to 70-year-old vines. Drink or hold.

Notes of wild berries, plums, smoked duck and orange rind introduce the 2021 Morgon Grands Cras, a medium to full-bodied, ample and succulent wine that's supple and sensual, with lively acids and a saline finish. It's another wine that shows the lighter vintage at its best.

Winemaker: Jean-Marc Burgaud
Appellation: Morgon
Lieu-Dit: Grands Cras
Varieties: Gamay
Terroir: Alluvial soil at an altitude of 250 meters
About The wine
The ample wine, dark ruby cherry-scented, with soft tannins comes from an alluvial soil called “les grands cras” south of the cru Morgon, an altitude of 250 meters. It is refined in bottles in the spring.
Vineyard Age: 65 Years
Vinification: Maceration of the whole grapes for 10 days. Bottling in March
Vinification Is Traditional: The maceration of whole grapes in vats (both stainless steel and concrete vats are employed at the estate) is of varying duration depending on the vintage and the appellation, without heat treatment, without the use of specific yeasts, in order to obtain typical and terroir wines.
The wines are raised in vats (stainless steel or concrete) or casks (Reserve, Javenniers, James cuvees) according to their characters and their origin for several months depending on the vintage and the appellation.
They are lightly filtered (or not according to the cuvées), before bottling that takes place from April to August, depending on the vintage, appellation, and cuvee.
Domain Burgaud
Jean-Marc Burgaud is a budding young star in Beaujolais. Located in the village of Morgon, he is hard working and meticulous and has great ambitions for his wines that his vineyards easily justify. His 19 hectares (Beaujolais villages 5 hectares; Régnié 1 hectare; Morgon 13 hectares) are planted with Gamay noir on granitic/schistose hillsides. The Beaujolais-Village comes from Chateau du Thulon in the village of Lantignie. The village is renowned for its hillsides and its granite soil. The 12th century chateau belonged to Jean-Marc Burgaud’s aunt, Mme Jambon. The vinification, elevage and bottling all take place in the chateau cellars. The vines are, on average, 40 years old. Typical Beaujolais vinification, with carbonic maceration of the whole berries for 5 to 6 days. Raised in tank for 4 to 5 months. Within Mogon there are several lieu dits and the Cote du Py is considered as the best vineyard in the appellation. This large sloping hillside, where the vines are in excess of 50 years old, has soil of schists, degraded rock, iron oxide and manganese which impart a distinct minerality to the wine. This is a well-structured wine, redolent of black fruits (mulberries and cherries). Carbonic maceration of the whole berries lasts 12 to 15 days, and the wine is raised in barrel as well as tank. Jean-Marc’s wines are all very bright and pure. Incredible value down the line as Burgaud wines are underpriced compared to other cru Beaujolais producers, especially considering the quality.
