Winemaking
Grapes were handpicked into ½ ton bins and delivered to the winery, then gently destemmed and delivered into the top of the fermenter. After a short cold soak, grapes were inoculated with yeast. After completion of fermentation, grape must was pressed off skins into another tank. After settling, wine was then racked off heavy solids into a mixture of new and neutral 100% French oak.
Chrissy Wittmann
Head of Winemaking
Chrissy Wittmann came to winemaking in an unconventional way. After earning a B.S. in Ecology and Systematic Biology at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, the future winemaker found her love for wine while analyzing soil and waste water samples in a lab. After serving time as a laboratory enologist, Chrissy returned to Cal Poly, achieving her master’s degree in Agriculture.
Domaine Curry
Domaine Curry wines are meticulously created in homage to the incredible women in our lives.
We hope you'll join the celebration.
Since founding Domaine Curry in 2015, Ayesha Curry and Sydel Curry-Lee have been inspired by the values exuded by the woman in Proverbs 31 of the Bible – sisterhood, empowerment, legacy, and self-determination. This passage became the basis for their brand ethos, referred to as Femme 31, which is now symbolically represented as a steadfast, eternally burning lamp on the new Domaine Curry packaging.
Femme 31
She considers a field and buys it;
Out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously;
Her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable, And her lamp does not go out at night.
Proverbs 31
The heart of Domaine Curry is a celebration of the strong women who have shaped the Curry family's heritage, honoring Ayesha and Sydel’s mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and daughters, as well as generations to come. The initial seed of inspiration for Domaine Curry arrived during a family dinner in 2015, where Ayesha gave a birthday toast for Sydel’s mom, Sonya. As she described her wonderful mother-in-law, many of the attributes she praised were similar to those of the robust red wine she held in her hand: strength and structure balanced with softness, openness, and approachability. The dream was born: in that moment, they recognized the project that would tap into their shared passion for wine while honoring the elegant & powerful women in their lives
Those tenets of loyalty, independence, virtue, and strength led Domaine Curry to its partnership with The Prisoner Wine Company. Joining forces with a women-led company was pivotal in Domaine Curry’s journey, and continues to foster our mission and support our growth.
The Prisoner Wine Company
Domaine Curry is excited to announce that we have been acquired by a notable women-led powerhouse: The Prisoner Wine Company. With an established, innovative and disruptive portfolio, the team at The Prisoner Wine Company makes for ideal partners to define and lead the fine wine category for Black and multicultural women. Together, we'll bring you more of the meticulously-crafted Napa Valley wines you know and love, along with exploration into new varieties.
Redefining Taste
When our first wine, The Prisoner, was released two decades ago as a complex blend of some of California’s best and most unusual grape varieties, it swiftly and permanently changed the perception of what a red blend wine could be.
Since then, we’ve grown to include a range of rule-bending blends with provocative label designs, being recognized by fans and wine critics alike as one of the most bold and innovative wine brands in the market, leading the resurgence of California luxury red blends and earning “cult” wine status.
Today, our Director of Winemaking Chrissy Wittmann and her team work with over 100 growers in northern California, bringing together exceptional fruit to produce a family of intriguing wines unrestricted by tradition. The Prisoner Wine Company is located on the legendary Highway29 in Napa Valley and welcomes visitors year-round for unexpected, immersive experiences.
