Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey- Chambertin
Dix Climats 2019
Village Appellation
There are several possible explanations regarding the origin of the name Gevrey: is it derived from the Gallic "Gibriacus" or from the combe de Lavaut, "Gaba" in Latin meaning "gorge". The name "Gevrey" first appeared in 1219.
Vine Variety: Pinot Noir
Surface Area: 330 hectares of which 51 hectares extend into the village of Brochon
Altitude: 240 to 280 m
Soil: Filling limestones, limestones with entrocs, cone pebbles
Our Plot
We have 8 Gevrey-Chambertin parcels situated in the following lieux-dits: En Combe, En Champs, En Vignes Belles, Croix des Champs, En Jouise, En Pallud, Aux Mairchais and Aux Epointures. The surface area of our GevreyChambertin parcels amounts to 4 hectares.
Our Gevrey – Chambertin Dix Climats
Our Gevrey-Chambertin is matured in oak barrels previously used for one wine made from wood from the Allier and Nivernais regions, with medium to medium-plus toasts.
With a fine colour and visual aspect and good texture, on the palate the Gevrey-Chambertin leaves a sensation of freshness with a delicate body and slight woody hints. Its tannins are melted in a tender and silky texture that highlight its aromatic refinement and subtlety.
Serving Temperature: 16° to 18°C
Matching Food: Epoisses pie, beef fondue
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze
Gevrey-Chambertin, France
Since 1850
Family Estate
Six generations have been running at the Domaine.
Five generations have been running the Domaine for 163 years, Caroline and Nicolas, Christine and Philippe's children represent the sixth.
In 1850, Jean-Baptiste Laroze started a vineyard operation in Gevrey Chambertin.
He was later succeeded by Félix Laroze.
In 1919, Suzanne, the daughter of Félix, married Alexandre Drouhin, who owned vines in Chambolle Musigny and the estate was henceforth called Drouhin-Laroze.
The Estate is currently run by Philippe and Christine Drouhin, assisted by their children Caroline and Nicolas.
A family that is united
and whose talents complement each other
Each successive generation continued to develop the Estate with the sole objective of investing in hillside vineyards, which was a visionary and risky choice. At the time, those vineyards were already very expensive and not very productive. The bet paid off and today, thanks to the sacrifices and risk-taking of the previous generations, the 11.50 hectare Estate is one of the most prestigious in terms of diversity, quality and the surface area of its appellations.
Visionary Men
A Unique Setting
Today an exceptional Estate and wine cellar.
There is work to be done every day in order to present clients with exceptional wines that are representative of our superlative "terroirs" and of the typicity of the Pinot Noir grape variety.
Our vines are grown and tended with a fundamental concern for the land and in tune with the seasons, enabling Nature and "terroir" to fully manifest themselves, all the while adapting ancestral techniques to suit the constraints of today.
Regular between-row tillage, early cluster thinning, thorough leaf removal and picking by hand all contribute to the growth of optimum-quality grapes.
The grapes are systematically sorted before reaching the fermenting vats.
Governed by the quality of the grapes harvested after an entire year's work, vinification is a meticulous and traditional process carried out in our modern vat hall.
Elegance, power, finesse and aromatic opulence.
Philippe Drouhin imparts his own style, seeking to bring out the best qualities of the grape variety and the typicity of the "terroir", combining elegance, power, finesse and aromatic opulence.
The long, natural process of maturing lasts 18 months in our two-storey vaulted cellars built in 1815.
We use three highly-reputed coopers to supply our new barrels. Our Grand Cru wines are matured in new barrels, our Premier Cru in 50% new barrels and our Villages wines in barrels having served once before.
Once the maturing process is complete, we bottle our wines on the estate without fining or filtering.
A profound commitment to our profession, total stringency and the determination to produce veritable "nectars" contribute to the excellent image enjoyed by the estate, the finest ambassador of which remains "The Wine".
