This is a very well crafted and refined cab blend with a medium to full body, round and creamy tannins and a delicious finish. Give this time to soften but already polished and delicious.
Rated 90 Points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Made with the addition of 14% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec and 4% Syrah, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Double Canyon Vineyard opens to aromas of crème de cassis, blackberry jus, plum reduction with elements of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and hints of roasted coconut husk. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is balanced, offering cedar and cigar spice flavors before dusty tannins sway across the mid-palate. The wine concludes with a complex and lingering finish. The wine spent a year and a half in 65% new oak, primarily French with 10% new American oak.
Double Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon
Horse Heaven Hills 2017
Our Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the essence of the varietal as expressed by this prestigious appellation. The persistent wind that that combs across the desert landscape coupled with the unique terroir sets this place apart from any other winegrowing region in Washington State. The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon with balance, structure and elegance.
Winemaker Notes
Characteristic of the appellation and the 2017 vintage, this Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas of rich blackberry, pie crust and baking vanilla. The wine enters the palate with a silky raspberry profile accented by light notes of confectioners' sugar. Hints of peach and raspberry take you into the finish, lingering with the juicy acidity that is characteristic of Horse Heaven Hills.

Double Canyon Vineyard
Double Canyon Vineyard encompasses 90 acres of estate vines located in the heart of Horse Heaven Hills, six miles from the Columbia River. Situated roughly in the footprint of the original wheat crop circles that preceded the vines, the vineyard is planted densely at about 1,850 plants per acre - double the norm in Washington - in order to crowd the space and achieve less fruit per plant. Producing less fruit increases overall quality, as all of the plant’s resources are concentrated into fewer clusters.
Long sunny days set in contrast to cool evening temperatures create optimal conditions for the diverse clonal selections of Bordeaux varietals that grow here. The vineyard is primarily planted to a range of different Cabernet Sauvignon clones that have been selected for the characteristics they have displayed from our site over the past decade of winegrowing.
Double Canyon
Horse Heaven Hills
There are few places in the world capable of producing truly remarkable wine. Despite all we’ve learned of viticulture over the centuries, it is still largely the whim of nature and fate of geological events that unfolded long ago that dictate where this rare and special terroir is located. Our job then is to seek out parcels of land that present an opportunity to cultivate great wines. In 2007, we did just that, when we founded Double Canyon. From that moment, our focus has been crafting exceptional Washington Cabernet Sauvignon from pedigreed vineyard sites, anchored by our namesake Double Canyon Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills.
For the past 50 years, Horse Heaven Hills has produced some of the most revered fruit in Washington. Our 90-acre Double Canyon Vineyard, named for two ravines that run through the property, was selected for its desirable location and proximity to the Columbia River. Influenced by volcanic activity, ancient glacial deposits, desert soils, and a persistent wind that blows off the river, Double Canyon wines capture the distinctive character of this renowned appellation.
Double Canyon opened the doors to its new winemaking facility in West Richland, Washington just in time for harvest 2017. When it came to building a home for our wines, we took a studied, philosophical approach. In pursuit of making great Cabernet Sauvignon, we brought together a small team of experts with more than 175 years of combined winemaking and production experience to draw on this depth of knowledge and collaborate on the design of a best-in-class facility. Technologically advanced and designed for top-level craftsmanship, the new Double Canyon winery allows us to control every aspect of winemaking. Armed with new tools to automate processes such as temperature-control and pumps-overs, we’ll be able to achieve an even higher level of precision, efficiency and quality.
Production capacity of Double Canyon’s winery will begin at 50,000 cases with the opportunity to scale in the future. Located in close proximity to our vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills, the building is also central to amenities in the greater Tri Cities area as well as Washington State University’s new wine research facility.
Winemaker
Kate Michaud
Winemakers are frequently called artists. Perhaps that explains how, Kate Michaud, an art history major, ended up in wine country exercising her creative inclinations in the cellar.
Michaud was born in the Midwest, but spent her formative years in Europe. One might conclude it was there she learned about wine, but that wasn’t the case.
Upon graduating from college, Kate spent a winter in Colorado, snowboarding and working odd jobs, shoveling snow and doing mechanical work. Though insignificant at the time, Kate learned something about herself during this period, realizing that she enjoyed working with her hands doing physical labor. That same winter she developed an interest in drinking wine. These combined realizations informed her decision to pursue winemaking.
Drawn first into the industry through the hard work of pulling hoses, cleaning tanks, and moving barrels, Kate cut her teeth as a cellar worker at Bonny Doon Vineyard in Santa Cruz. From there she traveled to Western Australia to work a harvest in the Margaret River region. When she returned to Santa Cruz, Michaud landed the position of assistant enologist at David Bruce Winery. A short time later, eastern Washington beckoned with its undiscovered potential, and Michaud followed. As assistant winemaker at Canoe Ridge Vineyard in Walla Walla, she finally had her own wines to nurture and was responsible for all phases of winemaking. She married a fellow enologist, set down roots, and started a family.
Alas, in search of new challenges, Kate returned to the southern hemisphere to learn cold fermentations at Kim Crawford Winery in New Zealand. She was pregnant, working 12-hour days, 7 days a week. Upon returning to Washington, Kate joined Covey Run, where she managed production and learned the financial and operational sides of the business. By 2013, with over a decade of experience under her belt and critical praise for her wines, Michaud began receiving offers to consult at various wineries across Washington State. In 2017, Kate was offered the position of Winemaker at Double Canyon. She approaches her opportunity at Double Canyon with enthusiasm for shaping the future of wines that hail from these renowned Horse Heaven Hills vineyards.
“The Double Canyon facility features every bell and whistle imaginable to meet an extraordinarily high quality level. To a winemaker, it’s a dream. The key is to achieve a perfect balance so that one doesn’t overshadow the other. It’s tricky getting a bigger, richer wine that doesn’t read hedonistic. That’s where our efforts and all the details come in.” Kate Michaud
