The Vineyard
A century-old family homestead fringed with redwoods, Heintz Ranch has been farmed by the Heintz family since 1912. The 50-acre vineyard is located in Occidental, considered to be a cooler portion of the Russian River Valley AVA. However, this site, located on an exposed ridge, experiences warmer temperatures in an otherwise cool region, producing wines that combine richness with tension. Heintz Vineyard is world renowned for the quality of fruit grown by 3rd generation farmer Charlie Heintz, who feels it is his responsibility to protect and nurture the land.
The Vintage
At 900 feet elevation, La Follette’s ridgetop blocks benefit from both the influence of the Pacific Ocean in the mornings, and the long, sunny afternoons. In 2016, the complementary trio of 115, Beringer, and Pommard clones were harvested and co-fermented to further the expression of terroir from this venerable site.
The Wine
A complex bouquet of cherry, anise and redwood tips, complemented with earthy notes as the wine opens up in the glass. A silken texture on entry leads to a comingling of cranberry and dried floral notes on the palate. Hints of bay and resin, and a soft layer of tannins underpin the core of red fruit. This very complex Pinot Noir offers a balance of striking aromatics, an array of varietal flavors and a mouth-filling finish.

La Follette
An Ongoing Dialogue with Singular Vineyards
Guided by Principle
La Follette wines are guided by the principle of allowing each vintage from our vineyard sites to be its own masterpiece. Greg La Follette, our founding winemaker, whose passion was to capture the unique flavors and textures of the Coastal California terroir, forged the guiding principles behind La Follette wines. An imperative in realizing Greg’s vision is sourcing fruit from the very best regions and vineyards along the Coast of California. Simone Sequeira, La Follette’s winemaker, has learned and embraced the philosophy of terroir-driven wines. She learned under the tutelage of Greg; now under the guidance of our winemaking consultant Ehren Jordan, La Follette continues to build upon the tradition of creating wines that authentically reflect their origins.
Winemaking Philosophy
La Follette embraces the old-world concept of terroir: that each individual vineyard site has a unique expression, that can be expressed through the wines made from grapes grown in that place. The winemaker's role is to create a wine that is transparent to the site, pure in its expression and enjoyable to drink. As we work with these sites, vintage after vintage, our understanding deepens and the wines become more reflective of that place, at that time.
Vineyard Philosophy
In producing the most distinctive site-driven Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, La Follette partners with family-owned and farmed vineyards that are committed to maximizing the potential of their unique site, working with them to execute the viticultural directives that La Follette develop with them. These directives are guided by decades of analyzing soil composition, a vine’s biology, and the finished wine’s intended characteristics.
