Tasting Notes
Starmont Chardonnay is crafted to enjoy with food or simply by the glass. Our aim is to retain the focus on the unique Chardonnay fruit expression of Carneros - bright citrus and apple, along with modest tropical fruit notes and spice. The 2017 is pale gold in color featuring flavors of lemon-lime and green apple, a mid-palate with medium body backed by fresh acidity and subtle notes of dried sage that show on the medium length finish. This is an exceptionally crisp and refreshing Chardonnay from Carneros that will gain complexity for three years from vintage.
Winemaking
The fruit was handpicked, as well as state-of-the-art machine harvested, then carefully sorted at the winery. Traditional methods are used - aging sur lies for 10 months in 20% new French oak to add richness and partial malolactic fermentation to balance the wine’s acidity. Modest use of French oak enhances the wine’s expression of region, while not playing too dominant a role in the overall wine. A large portion of the blend (51%) comes from the historic Stanly Ranch with the balance sourced from vineyards throughout Carneros. A combination of barrel fermentation (60%) and stainless steel tank fermentation (40%) was used with the goal of providing a complex and interesting Chardonnay that maintains a varietal correctness and sense of place.
Carneros Wine Region
Bounded by climate and topography, the Carneros wine-growing region in Northern California is uniquely unbounded by political affiliation - Sonoma County shares Carneros with Napa Valley, and many vineyards of the Sonoma Valley American Viticulture Area (AVA) are also located within this sub-appellation.
Carneros is also distinctive, among Sonoma County's wine regions, for its relatively uniform landscape of gently rolling, sparsely wooded hills above a wide, flat plain.
The name Los Carneros, 'the rams' in Spanish, dates from the 1830s, when Mexico administered this region. Sheep ranches, dairies, and hay fields continued to dominate until the 1970s. Today Carneros has 8,000 vineyard acres and more than 20 wineries. AVA status was given in 1983.
Top billing goes to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for sparkling and still wine. Because Carneros garnered acclaim early in California's wine renaissance, many vineyards here were planted with so-called 'California clones' like Martini, Swan, and old Wente. Syrah is an exciting newcomer, along with Rhône regional white varietals like Roussanne and Marsanne. Merlot remains strong, and there's some Cabernet Sauvignon to be found.
