Winemaker Notes
The Spur 2019 is crafted from blending the classic Bordeaux varietals with Petite Sirah, which offers a distinctively California expression. Each varietal is farmed, harvested, and handcrafted individually to achieve its greatest expression prior to assembling the final blend. The 2019 vintage provides an aromatic profile of black cherry, spiced cranberry, and subtle oak with complementary notes of graham cracker and clove. The dark fruit aromas carry through to the palate which is framed by fine tannins, and a rich, lasting, and elegant mouthfeel. Enjoy through 2027.
Vineyard Notes
All grape varieties in this wine are exclusively sourced from our estate vineyard in the Livermore Valley. All of the Bordeaux varieties were grown in the Sachau vineyard located directly behind our historic tasting room. Elevation in this vineyard ranges from 616-845 feet and the soils consist of mainly very gravelly, coarse sandy loam - ideal for these varieties. The Cabernet Sauvignon was also grown in our Louis Mel vineyard. A distinct feature of the Louis Mel vineyard is an ancient riverbed that runs through it. The Petite Sirah is grown on the Hayes vineyard, which has the widest elevation range (560-860 feet) on our entire estate. It features an array of soil types, aspects, and slopes, which makes it ideal for growing a range of grape varieties. We farm all of our vineyards block-by-block to ensure optimal flavor and fruit expression.
Murrieta’s Well
Murrieta’s Well is one of California’s original wine estates and has been growing grapes since the 1800s. Our vineyard was started with cuttings from the famed Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau Margaux vineyards in France; today it continues to produce the highest quality fruit. We are proud of our heritage and believe our wines truly reflect the sense of place we love so much.
1884 Louis Mel fell in love with the estate and purchased the land for him and his wife. He built a gravity flow winery into the hillside and planted a vineyard from cuttings from famed Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau Margaux. Today descendants of those original vines still grow on our estate and our tasting room is located in the original gravity flow winery building.
1940 Louis Mel sold the property to his friend, Ernest Wente. The property has been part of the Wente family’s estate ever since.
1990 Philip Wente and Sergio Traverso partnered together to revive the winery. They named the winery and wine label, Murrieta’s Well, paying homage to the rich history of the property.
2015 Acclaimed winemaker, Robbie Meyer, is appointed to oversee our estate vineyard and craft wines that inspire people to think about where the grapes are grown.
Today
As Murrieta’s Well enters their 30th anniversary, Jordan Wente, 5th generation winegrower and eldest daughter of Phil Wente, begins her journey leading a beloved vineyard.
