Our winemaker Angel Anocíbar has directed since its grounds the technical project of Abadía Retuerta under the guidance of Pascal Delbeck internationally renowned winemaker. He is a firm believer that the vine should not be forced and that time and knowledge alone should be allowed to get the most out of the grape.
2014 Abadia Retuerta Pago Valdebellon
Sardon Del Duero
This wine with a great personality has been produced entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon variety grapes grown on a limestone-rich terroir blessed with its own microclimate. After a thorough maceration, it undergoes 24 months of aging in new French oak barrels.
The result is a wine with an intense dark red colour that – despite its heavy body – releases a delicate air of sweet spices, exotic fruit and mineral aromas. Its persistent black current bouquet is a mark of its breeding. Overall it is a complex and generous wine that earned up to 97 points in Wine Advocate, published by the renowned American critic Robert Parker.
And though the variety is not typical of the area, Pago Valdebellón has known how to respect the spirit and the age-old tradition of the Abbey.
Ageing: 18 Months in French new oak barrels
Apellation: Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León - Sardón de Duero
Grape Variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Alcohol: 14% Vol.
Description
Fresh and complex on the nose, evoking aromas of garrigue (thyme, etc.). Its fresh herby notes reveal the true rank of this estate wine. Hints of balsam and subtle floral notes fuse together with coffee and pepper. In the mouth it is elegant, sweet, with character and personality; the wood is elegant and perfectly integrated to make a wine that is complete.
The 2014 Vintage
The main feature of this vintage is the large number of racemes per plant we found budding on the vines (30% above average). This forced us to do very strict green pruning to adapt production. Autumn and winter recorded 250 l of rainfall, which took the phreatic stratum to maximum capacity. Summer was quite dry (not one single drop of rain fell in August), but water reserves completed the cycle of the vine thanks to good control of the number of racemes on each one. The month of September recorded rainfall of 32 l, which led to the first signs of botrytis. October was a rainy month and that led us to bring the date of the harvest forward, since the grape was already ripe and the rain could have compromised its health. So, white grapes were harvested on 14 September. The harvest of the black grapes began on 24 September and ended on 6 October with Pago Garduña. If we take the heat summation index of the vintage into account, it shows a warmerthan-average climate, which is, in principle, good for quality.
The white wine of this vintage is very aromatic. It has excellent acidity and is big and persistent in the mouth.
Production: 24 barrels divided into 5.717 bottles, 200 magnum and 50 doubles magnum.
Storage: Storage temperature should not exceed 15º C.
Life: It will develop its potential over the next 5 years and then continue its refinement in the bottle, reaching its high towards 2020.
