This wine comes from our family’s vineyard planted in 1940 and located in the Loncomilla Valley, 50km from the Pacific Ocean. Our vineyard is dry farmed and tended with great care which results in wines of great complexity, concentration and balance. Hecedor de Mundos (Dreamer of New Worlds) pays tribute to Francisco Gillmore, our founder, whose bold vision is the inspiration for these passionately handcrafted wines. Vigners, Daniella Gillmore and Andres Sanchez
The Gilmore Winery is perfectly placed in the Loncomilla Valley, one of the few areas in the Maule region with the ideal natural conditions for producing great wines. Employing dry farming techniques in the rolling hills that stretch to the coastal mountains means our vines produce distinctive and characterful red grapes.
Our goal is to maximize the potential of the fruit grown in this dry coastal climate and celebrate the individual, complex wines they produce. Our wines are the product of our unique environment and imbued with the spirit of our master winemaker they capture the essence of the valley.
The experienced viticulturists at Gilmore continually study the vineyards to ensure our grapes are well balanced and this, combined with traditional winemaking techniques, means our wines reflect our innovative philosophy.
Gillmore is a family business, founded in 1990 by Francisco Gillmore. In a joint venture with his daughter Daniella and son-in-law the winemaker Andrés Sánchez, they have developed the project to give distinct character to the Gilmore wines.
Our philosophy is to produce the highest quality wines in the Loncomilla Valley, wines that exceed expectations and open the mind to the true potential of Chilean wine. The concentrated aromas and flavours of our wines make it easy to appreciate how expertly handcrafted they are.
Outstanding grapes are at the heart of all great wines. For this reason, our work is focused on the vines in the Tabontinaja Vineyards, all of which are cared for and harvested exclusively by hand.
We are committed to this slower and more skilled style of production. We grow a range of varieties in the Tabontinaja Vineyards: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere, Carignan, Malbec and Syrah. These are all grafted onto century old Mission vine rootstock which contributes greatly to the character and terroir. We study, harvest and ferment each variety individually to develop and create the finest wines.
The Tabontinaja Vineyards benefit from singular soil composition. Terraces made up of alluvial clay soils and deep granitic colluvial rocks accommodate deep root systems without excessive fertility. The gently rolling hills with gradients of 5 to 8% ensure good drainage. This combination results in a low yield of distinctive fruit.
The Loncomilla Valley is located in the coastal dry area of the Maule Valley. This rare climate inspired us to apply the concept of dry farming, without irrigation. The rainfall in winter and early spring (800mm p.a) is essential to our system and has sole responsibility for providing our vines with water for the duration of the growing season. The rain is central; however, all of our 4 distinct seasons are vital to the development of our grapes. Whilst the grapes are ripening the vast temperature swings, from 30ºC during the day down to 10ºC at night, concentrate the flavours and develop more complex aromas in our fruit.
