"Wine is the most civilized thing in the world."
Ernest Hemingway
In creating these wines, we were inspired by the humble post and beam barns that endure across the American landscape. These simple yet elegant structures showcase the virtues of time honored technique and less-is-more craftsmanship. They speak to the same purity and timeless quality that we hope our wines embody. Purposefully crafted to be enjoyed upon release, Post & Beam wines are pure, elegant expressions of classic Napa Valley Varietals.
Post & Beam Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2021
Far Niente Family of Wineries & Vineyards
Classically crafted from carefully selected Napa Valley vineyards, Post & Beam Cabernet Sauvignon honors the fundamentals of traditional winemaking. It is our purest expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, with elegant layers of fruit, supple tannins, whispers of oak and a finish that is pure finesse.
Wine Tasting Notes
The 2021 Post & Beam Cabernet Sauvignon exudes a vibrant perfume of wild raspberry preserves with hints of clove and confectionery spice that envelop the nose. Round and textured on the palate, the entry is layered with soft red fruit flavors, supported by leather, cassis and elegant botanical accents on the mid-palate and lovely notes of toasted espresso beans on the finish.
Winemaker Notes
Aromas of cassis, clove, and Christmas spice jump out of the glass while notes of blueberry pie filling and toasted mocha continue on the palate. Structured tannins lead to a long and elegant finish, making this an instant seasonal classic.
Vineyard Description
The 2021 Napa Valley growing season was spectacular and our Napa Valley vineyards achieved the perfect balance of concentration and structure. This is truly an exceptional wine that will delight friends and family for any occasion.
Post & Beam
Framework For Fine Wine
Sometimes Cutting Edge Means Returning To Tradition
Post & Beam is endowed with generations of winemaking
experience from the far Niente Family of Wineries and Vineyards.
Why Post & Beam?
Named for the simple yet elegant barns that dot the American landscape as an enduring reminder of our history, Post & Beam represents craftsmanship, tradition, legacy, and purity. There’s nothing unnecessary or overly complicated about a post and beam barn. It just works beautifully. The same can be said for our wines. They are simple, elegant, pure expressions of each grape in its finest form.
Post & Beam wines are the consummate examples of Cabernet and Chardonnay and nothing else. And for people who truly love wine, that’s usually more than enough.
Strong Roots & A Firm Foundation
Every post and beam barn begins with a strong foundation, and so does every Post & Beam wine. Indeed, these wines are built upon foundational winemaking elements, executed flawlessly, so that they result in Cabernets and Chardonnays that taste as they were meant to taste. These are classically crafted wines that emanate from the heart and soul of true winemaking.
Traditional in the Best Sense of the Word
At Post & Beam, we make wines of uncommonly pure expression, built by generations of hands-on experience in producing authentic Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay with all of their essence – and none of the pretense.
Inspired by the hand-hewn, enduringly crafted structures that have stood for centuries as a quintessential part of our landscape, Post & Beam is endowed with the knowledge and experience of Far Niente. And that expertise, those four decades of winemaking at the highest possible level, has enabled us to create a wine with the purity of style of Post & Beam.
Transcending Trend
Rather than look to what’s currently “hot” or “cool,” Post & Beam takes its cues from proven, hand-crafted winemaking. Every step we take in the cellar is intended to highlight, frame and never mask our superb Napa Valley grapes. With our Chardonnay, foregoing malolactic fermentation preserves our fruit’s natural acidity while careful neutral oak barrel aging allows us to tease out layers of silky texture. For our Cabernet, it’s all about gentle pressings and an oak program that supports – but doesn’t overwhelm – the pure flavors and expressions of our Napa Valley Cabernet.
Chardonnays that are balanced and sophisticated, and that do justice to the ethos of genuine Chardonnay.
Cabernets that honor tradition and the fundamentals of superb wine-making, so that your first sip reinforces your belief in the true nature of Cabernet.

"Wine is the most civilized thing in the world."
Ernest Hemingway
We, of Course, Believe Hemingway Was Correct
But we also feel passionately that some wines are more civilized than others.
Ours, for example.
Far Niente, as well as all the other wines in our family exude a level of sophistication, elegance and wine wisdom that few wines can approach.
Our 135-year history has imbued us with knowledge and expertise that manifests itself through the soil, the vines, the aging, and more than anything else, the finished product.
If wine is indeed the most civilized thing in the world, we’re proud to be in the vanguard of civilization.
Far Niente
The Far Niente Winery was established in 1885 by John Benson, a forty-niner of the California gold rush and uncle of the famous American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer. Artistry clearly ran in the family because Benson hired Hamden McIntyre, creator of the former Christian Brothers Winery - now the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone - to design the building.
The building itself is a piece of art designed to both astound the eye, and the palate, since it functioned as a gravity flow winery, gently moving the grapes through each stage of production.
Far Niente prospered until the onset of Prohibition in 1919, whereupon it fell into disrepair. Sixty years later, in 1979, Gil Nickel purchased the winery and adjacent vineyard and began a three-year restoration process which resulted in its placement on the National Register of Historic Places.
Our first Chardonnay harvest took place in 1979. That vintage, along with the '80 and '81 vintages, were made off site. In 1982, winemaking returned to Far Niente with the first crush of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Today, Far Niente remains focused on Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay so that it can continue to concentrate its efforts on creating two varietal wines of astonishing quality.
