Quest aims to express the potential and excitement of Paso Robles
As makers and dreamers, our minds are never at rest. We are constantly in pursuit of the possibilities we have yet to create. Quest was born in this spirit and out of a love for American oak and Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Franc is one of the noble grapes of the world-famous Bordeaux region and yet was not widely planted in California, let alone Paso Robles. The fact is, Cabernet Franc is very particular when it comes to soil and temperature.
Lucky for us, after years of trial and error, we discovered the perfect terroir and microclimate in the Paso Robles AVA for the persnickety Cabernet Franc. Once our vines were established, we worked with our coopers to create the standard for luxury American oak barrels that would complement our vision for a world-class Cabernet Franc blend. We believe that creating an exceptional Cabernet Franc is much like creating an exquisite Pinot Noir; both varieties are soil, site, and temperature driven. The Cabernet Franc in this blend thrives in a distinct soil and requires a slightly cooler climate than Cabernet Sauvignon and the other grapes that dominate our local AVA. The journey from vision to bottle has been one of discovering the perfect elements to achieve our dream.
Quest Proprietary Red 2021
Quest is a wine that aims to express the increasingly recognized potential and excitement of Paso Robles. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that showcases the luscious softness and depth produced in our mountainous, oak studded, maritime-influenced home. Both noble grapes thrive in Paso’s semi-arid, rocky soils, and this wine is fruit-forward, with a toasty vanilla finish and grippy tannins. Quest has been aged in American oak barrels, yet displays an inherent softness. It reflects the region’s richly diverse terrain, where hidden pockets of exceptional vineyards account for its unique character.

Tasting Notes
The Quest Cabernet Franc Blend is an exciting and unique wine. This blend displays a beautiful herbaceous nose of anise seed, warm chocolate, and fresh mint. On the palette flavors of black fruit, dark chocolate, and slightly earthy nuance of leather are present. On the finish, soft fine tannins leave a light coat on the palette and mingle with a delicate touch of acidity that balance the wine allowing the flavors to linger.
Winemaking Notes
The Cabernet & Cabernet Franc are harvested and fermented individually by vineyard lots and then aged in used American oak barrels. The lots were racked twice during barrel ageing, blended together and put into 65% New American oak barrels for an additional 3 months. Just prior to bottling the wine is filtered. The 2021 Quest Red Wine was aged for a total of 11 months in oak, blended in summer of 2022 and bottled in late September of 2022.
Harvest Notes
The 2021 growing season was very typical through early spring with warm days and cool nights. Early summer through harvest gave us some unexpected heatwaves but plenty of marine breezes and mild weather prevailed. The result was a slight delay of harvest while we waited for acidity, pH and brix to balance creating mature flavors.
Vineyard Notes
We source our Quest Cabernet Sauvignon from four of our favorite districts in the area: The Estrella district, with its loamy and gravely river plain slopes and canyons. The San Miguel district with large rolling hills situated on ancient river plains’ edge and riverbanks that possess an intriguing blend of soils with both loam, gravel and calcareous deposits. The Geneseo district, in the heart of the ancient river plains and boasting rich loamy soils. The Paso Robles Highlands district, where ancient seabed calcareous soils are integrated with gravely soils. Our Cabernet Franc is sourced from vineyards in the Creston district, known for its large daily diurnal swings aided by the Templeton Gap maritime afternoon breezes and gravely soils, and the Paso Robles Highlands district.
Hope Family Wines
The Hope family has been farming in Paso Robles for more than 30 years. When they arrived in this barely-discovered region, they planted apples and grapes. Little did they know that the rolling, oak-studded terrain of Paso Robles would one day become a viticultural terroir of significance and one of the top winegrowing regions for quality red wine within the Central Coast.
Gone are the apple orchards. Today, the Hopes cultivate mature vineyards of the varieties best suited to their area including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Mourvedre and Grenache. Vine density has increased and each vine is asked to produce very little fruit. The terroir of this domain expresses itself in its unique regional character. Regardless of the varieties planted, the expression of Paso Robles is displayed in the glass with spice, licorice and berry in the nose, soft textures and silky tannins on the palate.
Hope Family Wines consists of five individual brands: Liberty School, Treana, Quest, Austin Hope, Troublemaker.
Best Paso Robles Winery
When Chuck Hope first laid eyes on the oak-studded hills of Paso Robles, he saw a land of beauty and opportunity. Struck by the possibilities hidden in the many microclimates of the Central Coast, Chuck and his wife Marlyn moved the family to Paso Robles in 1978 to start what would become Hope Family Wines. They raised their children, Austin and Chelsea, amongst the grapevines and oak barrels and were on the forefront of the Central Coast becoming a world-class viticultural region.
Hope Family Wines is still proudly family-owned and operated with Austin Hope now presiding over five unique labels: Liberty School, Austin Hope, Treana, Troublemaker, and Quest. A true family business, Austin’s wife Celeste, a professional photographer, spearheads all winery-related photography; together they are raising the third generation of Hopes, Ainsley and Avery, amongst the grapevines and oak barrels. Austin maintains the Hope family’s legacy of sustainable farming practices and long-standing tradition of making delicious, reliable, and accessible wines, all while infusing a vibrancy that resonates from the vine to the glass.
